Huntsville Historic Black Business District

huntsville historic black business district

Our project is to document and celebrate the history of African American-owned businesses on Holmes Avenue, Church Street, and Jefferson Street, between the period of Reconstruction and the late 1970s. Through the creation of a dedicated website, we aim to create a digital archive that preserves the legacy of these establishments and the impact they had on the community.

Visitors to the website will be able to explore the economic, social and cultural history of the African-American community in this area and gain a deeper understanding of the contributions these businesses and their owners made to the region. The website will include historical photos, stories, and information about the businesses and the people who ran them.

We believe that by providing this platform, we can honor and acknowledge the contributions of these businesses and their owners to the cultural heritage of the region and to the community. We hope that this project will educate and inspire future generations to continue to celebrate and preserve this important part of our history.
