Project: Register Old Baptist Cemetery - Hollywood, AL
The Old Baptist Cemetery, located in Hollywood, Alabama, holds a significant place in the history of Jackson County. This cemetery is located in the former site of the Mud Creek Primitive Baptist Church, which was the oldest documented Baptist church in the county, and it was built in 1819. Amongst the graves, there are marked with stones, some unreadable hand stones, which give an insight of the mixture of entities from Civil War veterans, slaves and many others. The cemetery is also divided in two sections, Old Baptist Cemetery and Old Baptist Cemetery African American Section.
We are proud to announce that we have completed two important tasks in preserving the historical significance of this cemetery. The Old Baptist Cemetery has been officially registered with the Alabama Historical Commission and has been marked with a historical marker to acknowledge the important role it has played in the history of Jackson County and the state of Alabama. We will continue to strive to protect, preserve and promote the history, culture and heritage of this cemetery and its community.

Project: Pre-Restoration Survey of Old Baptist Cemetery - Hollywood, AL
Historic African-American burial traditions utilized natural markers like wood, shrubbery, or flowers, which have been lost through the passage of time. Therefore, sections of Old Baptist Cemetery is bereft of headstones or other visual markers. This creates unique opportunities and challenges for restoration. To determine what lies beneath, we will partner with a remote sensing firm for a technologically advanced survey of the cemetery as part of the restoration project. The goal of the survey is to find unmarked burials and cross-referenced the flagged locations with the cemetery’s burial records to verify the data.
